Afterburner
An F-16 Fighting Falcon with the 35th Fighter Wing departs Yokota Air Base, Japan, June 24, 2016. Seen exiting the end of the aircraft, the jet exhaust is ignited at the afterburner, producing a second stage of combustion and a steam of powerful, yet fuel inefficient, thrust. An F-16 Fighting Falcon uses afterburner in short bursts during takeoff, climb, or combat maneuvers. (U.S. Air Force photo by Yasuo Osakabe/Released)
