Renewing Expiring Passports
Passports are renewed via the servicing Consulate based on where you are stationed. You need to make contact with the appropriate American Citizenship Services or Consular Office to renew your passport, and advise them where you are assigned in Australia. The ACS/Consular Office will provide you with more detailed instructions.
Consulate in Melbourne services Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and the Northern Territory
Consulate in Perth services Western Australia
Consulate in Sydney services New South Wales, Queensland, and Norfolk Island
Canberra: The Sydney Consular section is responsible for addressing individuals posted in the ACT and typically conducts outreach services at the Embassy in Canberra once per month.
Contact the ACS or Consular section serving your area and follow the directions for renewing your passport. You may be asked to submit photocopies prior to applying.
You will need to fill out the DD1056 for each dependent/member that requires an official passport renewal. Submit the following documents to the Special Issuance Agency (SIA) at Ft Belvoir.
DD1056 – Form can be found here: https://www.esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Documents/DD/forms/dd/dd1056.pdf
Customer Service Monday-Friday from 0800-1500 (US Eastern Time) 1-703-545-0003/0004
Once the SIA at Ft Belvoir receives and processes your DD1056, they will send it back to you (or the servicing Consulate) with a “2D Barcode.”
For the Consulate to process your application, generally you will need:
Two US-sized passport photos: We do not recommend that applicants try to take their own passport photo unless they have access to professional photography equipment. You can obtain suitable passport photos at any Australia Post outlet, but be sure to ask for US-sized photos because their default will be Australian passport photos, which are too small and cannot be used for US passports. US passport photos must be 2”x2”, on a white background, no less than 6 months old and the applicant cannot be wearing eyeglasses
One self-addressed Express Post envelope which will be used to mail your new official passport to you. You can purchase the Large Express Post envelope from Australia Post and we recommend you opt for the signature on delivery feature for added security.
Cost: If you will be required to have an in-person appointment at the consulate for your official passport, you will need to reach out to your service admin section for possible TDY funds.
Contact the ACS or Consular section serving your area and follow the directions for renewing your passport. You may be asked to submit photocopies prior to applying. For more information, visit their website: https://au.usembassy.gov/passports/
