Catching aircrafts, saving lives

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan – Airman 1st Class Matthew Struve, an electrical power production technician with the 374th Civil Engineer Squadron, evenly spaces the doughnuts along the emergency landing system cable at Yokota Air Base, Japan, July 10, 2013. The doughnuts are used to lift the cable above the ground level, making it easier for the aircraft’s tailhook to catch the cable, part of the arresting gear mechanism that assists with rapidly decelerating aircraft during landing.
