For a generation of service members, the observance of 9/11 is a source of deep reflection on what it means to serve and defend our nation. Whether you raised your right hand before, during, or after the events of that tragic day, our collective resolve was forever strengthened and unified.

It seems only fitting that on Thursday, the 13th anniversary of 9/11, a new generation of Airmen stepped forward to take on increased responsibilities to lead their fellow Airmen. I had the honor to personally congratulate 14 NCOs during the NCO Academy graduation and an additional 24 Airmen at the Airman Leadership School graduation. Thirteen years ago, they were undoubtedly still formulating what they would do in life, but I'm humbled and proud their path of service led them to the profession of arms.

Our Airmen wear the cloth of our nation with pride and professionalism, answering freedom's call with the same focus and intensity of the men and women who forged the path before them. They recognize the commitment they've inherited, and I'm confident they will continue to serve with honor and distinction.
