Rebuilding Sendai: a photographic journey
A Japanese Flag waves proudly outside the main passenger terminal at Sendai, exemplifying the hardy Japanese spirit shown in the Sendai Airport recovery effort. Once thought lost, the airport is now progressing to be reopened to international commercial travel once more. The rebuilding of Sendai has come to be seen as a symbol of Japan's recovery from the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the Japanese east coast March 11, according to Maj. John Traxler, 320th Special Tactics Squadron commander. (U.S. Air Force photo illustration/Staff Sgt. Samuel Morse)
