Life-saving training at Yokota
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- Yokota and Misawa Airmen recently received Blood Deglycerolization Team training provided by members of the Armed Services Whole Blood Processing Laboratory-West at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. The Haemonetics ACP215 system is designed to both glycerolize and deglycerolize red blood cells. Glycerol acts as a preservative to allow blood to be frozen for long periods of time. The glycerol must be removed before the blood can be used. After glycerolized red cells have been thawed, the plastic freezing bag is secured to a platform on the ACP215 by magnetic mounting posts. The ACP system dilutes the blood with sodium, utilizing the shaking platform to ensure adequate mixing and thus revitalize the red cells. (U.S. Air Force photo/Osakabe Yasuo)
