Airborne 23: where US airlift meets Japan tactical insertion
Japan Ground Self-Defense Force paratroopers, assigned to the 1st Airborne Brigade, jump from a U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules, assigned to the 36th Airlift Squadron, over the East Fuji Maneuver Area, Japan, during the Airborne 23 exercise, Jan. 31, 2023. Nine C-130J aircraft were used to carry approximately 300 Japan Ground Self-Defense Force paratroopers to drop zones at East Fuji Training Area during the static-line personnel jump portion of the exercise. The exercise also included nighttime airdrops of 100 supply bundles built by JGSDF members and inspected by Yokota Airmen. This is the first time the U.S. and Japan have worked together to build cargo bundles in support of the annual exercise. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Jessica Avallone)
