Cope North 23: Trilateral integration at Iwo To strengthens capabilities
U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Yelida Del Valle Ruiz, 554th Red Horse Squadron contingency airfield pavement evaluator, instructs Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force members on how to use a Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) for airfield survey operations during the Cope North 23 exercise, on the remote island of Iwo To, Japan, Feb. 21, 2023. The DCP is a tool used to gauge the consistency of the subgrade beneath the pavement surfaces of an airfield, and many measurements help build a picture of how much weight and usage sections of the airfield may be able to bear. Survey teams deploy to verify the status of an existing installation and what it can handle when there’s a demand to move aircraft and equipment to a new area. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
