U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 36th Airlift Squadron traveled to Japan Air Self-Defense Force Komaki Air Base to attend the 401st Tactical Airlift Squadron change of command, Aug. 1.

In addition to attending the change of command ceremony, the members of the 36th AS toured different base facilities at Komaki, reconnected with their JASDF counterparts and provided them with a comprehensive tour of a C-130J Super Hercules.

“We were honored to be invited,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Matthew Buchholtz, 36th AS commander. “The 36th AS and 401st AS often visit each other as part of our unofficial joint exchange program. Our squadrons routinely socialize outside of work as well – a testament to the genuine friendship we share alongside our working relationship.”

According to Buccholtz, the last time the two squadrons visited each other was when the 401st TAS attended the 36th AS change of command in May 2024.

“These unique events provide an opportunity for our Air Force and JASDF units to engage in meaningful discussions on training, operations and cultures,” said Staff Sgt. Trevor Humes, 36th AS instructor loadmaster. “Given that our units operate similar cargo aircraft and share a similar mission-set, these events are vital for strengthening our interoperability and ensure seamless cooperation during current and future bilateral operations.”
