One day a year, smokers put down their cigarettes, pipes and lighters to participate in The Great American Smokeout.
This year, 374th Medical Group hosted The Great American Smokeout event outside the Yokota Community Center to support and educate the men and women of Yokota regarding smoking and its negative health effects, Nov. 15.

"This is the 37th annual smokeout," said Staff Sgt. Treshawna Gwendo, Health and Wellness Center NCO in charge. "The event was created all those years ago to assist the 70 percent of smokers who want to quit."

Smokers were given the opportunity to sign a pledge stating they would not smoke for the entire day and received information on the Yokota Smoking Cessation program.

"This is a fantastic event," said Airman 1st Class Skyla Scher-Luna, 374th Force Support Squadron. "I think it's great that leadership put this event together to help us smokers take the first step toward quitting."

In addition to signing a pledge and gaining knowledge in the adverse affects of smoking, Yokota residents had the chance to enjoy some free food and music.

"Overall, I believe the event was a great success," said Gwendo. "It's a great feeling knowing I have helped several people towards a healthier lifestyle."
