Yokota responds to possible unexploded ordnance Published Dec. 6, 2011 374 Airlift Wing/Public Affairs YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- Yokota officials are responding to a possible unexploded ordnance discovered at a construction site in front of the base fitness center here Dec. 6 at approximately 1 p.m. Officials cordoned off the area around the construction site after a suspicious object was unearthed at the site. The cordoned area remains entirely on Yokota Air Base. The nature of the object remains to be determined, but base leadership has opted to take the most cautious course of action in response to this discovery. "The safety of our people and this installation is our first priority in responding to this situation," said Col. Bill Knight, 374 Airlift Wing vice commander. "We ask that base residents remain calm and stay clear of the area as we determine the nature of this object." Explosive ordnance disposal experts from Yokosuka Naval Station are supporting Yokota emergency responders in determining the nature of the object and will provide further disposal support as required. More information will be released as it becomes available.
