The Air Force Critical Days of Summer safety campaign officially kicked off May 28, Memorial Day weekend, and ends after Labor Day weekend, September 6.

According to the Air Force Safety Center, in fiscal year 2010, 16 Airmen were killed during this time period. Thirteen of these fatalities were due to reckless behavior and excessive speeds while operating four-wheeled and two-wheeled motor vehicles.

As temperatures begin to rise and servicemembers begin to head to cooler waters, it is recommended to utilize the wingman concept while participating in water sports, boating and swimming to help prevent unwarranted loses during this historically dangerous time.

The military has a long standing against drinking and driving, utilizing 225-Ride, taking a taxi or making arrangements beforehand can save a life as well as careers.

The Pacific Air Forces' 2011 CDS campaign, "I Can Save My Own Life" creates a supportive environment encouraging responsible and safe behavior for PACAF personnel and their families during the historically dangerous time of the year.

Yokota is kicking off the campaign with a Comedy Show, June 2 at the Taiyo Community Center at 11 a.m. The one hour show is an alcohol-awareness and risk reduction safety training program.

The 374th Airlift Wing Safety office will be promoting safe motorcycle riding, water activities, vehicle operation and bicycle riding.

"Our goal is zero preventable mishaps and fatalities this summer at Yokota," said Lt. Col. Brian Porter, 374th Airlift Wing chief of safety. "Historically, our greatest safety risks are associated with driving while distracted or impaired alongside sports-related injuries.

"With everyone's commitment to exercising sound judgment in the choices they make both on and off-duty this summer, we can work together to maintain our combat readiness and sustain our mission."
