New tax law affects spouses of military members Published March 18, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Lynsie Lorenz 374th Airlift Wing Public Affairs YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- The Federal Government passed a law affecting tax requirements and status for service members and their dependents during this and future tax seasons. The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act ensures that the spouses of military personnel who move with their spouse for military duty will be treated as not having changed residency for tax purposes. The MSRRA's effect will depend on the interpretations of each state. Service members and their spouses are encouraged to seek free, confidential advice from a military legal assistance office. Members stationed at Yokota can contact the tax center at 225-4927.
