From the early 1950s to the mid 1990s, one thing Yokota residents could always look forward to when driving through one of the base gates was a "picture perfect" salute and ready smile from Mr Toshio Kobayashi. We were saddened to hear last week that Mr. Kobayashi had passed away - he was 85 years old.

Mr. Kobayashi was a member of the base security forces unit from July 1950 to January 1995, and was well known both within and outside the Yokota community. Prior to that during World War II, he was a member of the Imperial Guard, a special hand-picked group of soldiers that secured the Imperial Palace grounds.

During his 45 year tenure, Mr. Kobayashi was well know by all Yokota residents - his trademark was his highly professional salute and "always ready to help" attitude. His many accomplishments were recognized by numerous awards and citations; to include his selection as the Pacific Air Forces Outstanding Security Forces Civilian Employee of the Year in 1983.

Chief Master Sgt. (Ret) Norman Mash, who worked with Mr Kobayashi in the SF unit, remembers him fondly for his professionalism and dedication - "Mr Kobayashi was just an amazing individual - his salute was one of the best I encountered in my career - truly professional."

These thoughts were echoed by Col. (Ret) James Brophy, a prior Director of Security Forces for 5 Air Force who also worked with Mr. Kobayashi "....he was an absolute professional and a real gentleman, thoroughly dedicated to Yokota AB and the U.S. Air Force - our SF career field has lost a fellow comrade and a true friend."

Mr Kobayashi was also well known for his excellent gardening skills and his spirit of giving. He grew many different types of vegetables and twice a year delivered large baskets to his many friends at Yokota and in the local Fussa area - never asking for a thing in return.

The entire Yokota community is greatly saddened by Mr. Kobayashi's passing and offers our most sincere condolences to his friends and family.
