Courtesy, professionalism and efficiency are just a few of the reasons the 37 member Yokota Air Base Post Office was recognized as the Air Force Outstanding Large Postal Facility for 2008.

"Customer service; it's what we're all about. It's our utmost responsibility and this group takes service far beyond the status quo," said William McGrath, 374th Communications Squadron, director plans and resources flight. "They really try to put themselves in their customers' shoes to make sure everyone leaves with a smile."

Mr. McGrath said he receives regular feedback from base residents on his unit's outstanding customer service.

"I can't tell you how many times I get complements from around the base, thanking me for having such helpful Airmen," he said. "Oftentimes, I hear of postal members going outside and loading or unloading a customer's vehicle for them or carrying packages to and from the bus stop, because the customer had no vehicle."

Mr. McGrath, who has worked for the Air Force in one aspect or another since 1977, with 24 of those years in Japan and 18 years at Yokota, said he's proud of his team and their accomplishment.

"Of all the different groups I've worked with, this team is by far the most professional, motivated, customer service-minded unit to date," he said.

In addition to demonstrating remarkable customer service, the post office implemented additional changes that factored into the award.

"Our technological advances, such as the 'A2B' parcel tracking and delivery system and the USPS Delivery Confirmation System (increased efficiency by) streamlining the delivery process from start to finish," said Tech. Sgt. Marc Nickelberry, assistant postmaster.

The new technology allowed the office to post more than 5,500 pieces of bulk mail within five hours, demolishing the Department of Defense standard of 72 hours. Additional reasons for motivation exist, beyond increasing efficiency and winning awards.

"There's nothing more satisfying than seeing the smile on a customer's face after they've received that special package or letter from a loved one or family member," said Sergeant Nickelberry. "It makes the extra effort seem like no effort at all."
