YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- U.S. Air Force Col. Richard McElhaney, 374th Airlift Wing and Yokota Air Base commander, hosted members of the Government of Japan, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and local municipalities to extract samples of treated water on May 14, 2025.
The water was extracted from the Fire Training Area on Yokota AB after being treated for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).
After the samples were retrieved, subject matter experts provided a group of representatives an overview brief of the system and plan.
The samples will be tested by Japanese government officials to instill confidence in the water filtration system prior to Yokota AB releasing clean water into the storm drain.
“This is a huge step in the right direction,” McElhaney said. “We are all One Community here and our mutual trust and friendship is a top priority. I’m thrilled to take another step toward closing this chapter and making Japan a better place for all of us.”
横田基地、PFASろ過へ前進
２０２５年５月１４日（水）、横田基地第３７４空輸航空団司令官リチャード・マックエルハニー空軍大佐は、日本政府、東京都、基地周辺自治体関係者を受け入れ、処理水のサンプルを採取した。
この水は横田基地の消防訓練施設から採取、PFOSとPFOAの処理が行われたもの。
サンプル回収後、担当者がシステムと計画の概要を説明した。
このサンプルは、横田基地が雨水排水路に放出する前に、日本政府関係者によって水ろ過システムの信頼性を確認、検査するために採取された。
