YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan – -- U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 374th Security Forces Squadron held a retirement ceremony for military working dog Edy, at Yokota Air Base, Japan, June 5.
After years of honorable service, MWD Edy was officially retired from his service as a patrol explosive detection dog in the 374 SFS.
“Everybody loves the military working dogs,” said Col. Glenn Bowersox, 374 SFS commander. “Military working dogs have been in service for a long time, and will continue to be in service.”
Edy began training as a patrol explosive detection dog on Jan. 6, 2020, completed training on June 16, 2020 and arrived to Yokota on Aug. 31, 2020.
During Edy’s time at Yokota, he was assigned to four different handlers and contributed to 17 United States Secret Service missions protecting the President, Vice President, foreign dignitaries and heads of state. Throughout his time, Edy also responded to calls for assistance as an explosive detector and patrol dog.
“No matter how good technology gets, it will be unable to replicate what the military working dog is able to do for us,” said Bowersox.
