JASDF tours Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations at Yokota

The 374th Force Support Squadron and Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations, Operating Location Pacific team welcomed Japan Air Self-Defense Force members to the mortuary affairs for a tour of the facility at Yokota Air Base, Japan, July 29 - 30.

JASDF members received a brief overview of the mission and responsibilities of the AFMAO and the role of base-level mortuary operations. They also toured the facility and learned about the equipment and processes for remains preparation, storage and transportation.

“We were honored to host JASDF and reaffirm the importance of U.S. Air Force mortuary operations within the region,” said Ruben Garza, AFMAO, Operating Location Pacific mortuary director.

The bilateral engagement provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge, share best practices and ensure that both forces are aligned in standards, procedures and mutual support capabilities in the event of a joint or multinational mission requirement.


“These engagements build relationships, foster trust and improve cooperation between partner forces,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Joshiro Nagashima, 374 FSS readiness, plans and mortuary section chief. “By understanding each other’s capabilities, procedures and cultural considerations, we can respond more effectively and respectfully during sensitive operations.”

Mortuary affairs is responsible for ensuring fallen service members are treated with dignity, honor and respect, while providing care, service and support to their families.
