At the Military and Family Readiness Center, 41 student ambassadors representing Yokota High School and Yokota Middle School trained to be advisors, advocates and mentors for new students in the upcoming school year at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Aug. 11-12.

Student ambassadors are leaders who connect peers with school resources and activities. They lead by example, welcome new students and provide tours to help them become familiar with the campus.

During the two-day training event, students participated in various timed activities to build their leadership skills, teamwork, and resourcefulness. Additionally, personnel from across the installation came in and presented the student ambassadors with various examples of how leadership can look.

Joshua Fly, 374th Airlift Wing school liaison program manager, hopes the program prepares student ambassadors to be strong leaders in the community.

“Our students from our middle school and high school are typically the first person that a student meets when they come to a new environment, a new setting, a new school, as military kids do far too often,” he said. “And so, what we’re trying to do today is train our student ambassadors to be more than just ambassadors by name but also give them some tools so they can be advocates and positive role models in the community.”

Last year, student ambassadors participated in two training sessions, one during the first semester and another during the second semester, with their goal this year to accomplish a similar training schedule.

Ava McAlroy, president of the Student Ambassador Program, looks forward to how the training event will improve not just the student bodies at YHS and YMS, but Yokota as a whole.

“We use this event a lot to teach people how to make others feel welcome and included within the community, as well as build a team that works together and keeps each other accountable,” she said. “We’d really like to make the ambassadors a firm foundation of Yokota.”
