Emergency Boiler Repairs restore heat to Yokota’s East Side

Hirokatsu Matsuda, a 374th Civil Engineer Squadron welder technician, dons protective equipment before welding a damaged section of an internal coil during an emergency east side boiler system repair at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Feb. 6, 2026. The boiler uses steam internally to heat water, which is distributed at approximately 240 degrees Fahrenheit to east side facilities and housing for comfort heating and hot water. Damage to one of the internal coils caused a loss of system pressure and reduced heat output, requiring the boiler to be shut down to prevent further damage. (U.S. Air Force photo by Yasuo Osakabe)
