Mustache March kicks off

Yokota Air Base, Japan --  The 374th Operations Group hosted a Mustache March fundraiser kick-off event on March 1, a month long mustache growing competition with five different categories to participate in.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Air Force Assistance Fund, an annual effort to raise funds for the charitable affiliates that provide support to our Air Force family in need whether it’s active duty, retirees, reservists, guard and our dependents, including surviving spouses.

“Last year about $2,700 was raised for the AFAF,” said 1st Lt. Matthew Gabreski, 459th Airlift Squadron C-12 pilot. “This year we expect to meet or beat that.”

There’s no need to register for those who wish to let their mustaches grow and participate. Everyone will have until March 31, where they will attend the judging of the mustaches, scheduled to take place at the Officer’s Club at 4 p.m.

In order to determine the winners, participants will attend this event where the best candidates for each of the categories will be chosen. People can then pledge money to their favorite. Whichever nominee has the most money pledged in their name will win the category.

The categories for the event are:

Best in show - This award is reserved for the most spectacular specimen produced over the course of the month.

Most disturbing – This award is given to the person whose mustache didn’t know right from wrong.

Most fitting - Sometimes the stars align and a man becomes something... more, with a mustache. This award is given to the mustache that makes a man greater.

Dirt lip - The little mustache that couldn't. The recipient of this award can only take solace in the fact that this is all for charity.

Best artificial – A female only category, is the best mustache money can buy or that you can make yourself.

“We want to see the fruits of everyone’s labor,” said Gabreski. “We want to see what kind of mustache they can come up with.”
