Due to maintenance on the Old West Substation, Yokota will experience power outages throughout the base 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 20 and May 11, 2013.

Most of the main base will be out of power, excluding some of the east side and west side, the Yokota Community Center and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Air Defense Command and Air Defense Operations Group.

Housing on west and east side will retain power and the Base Exchange and commissary will be open for business. The power outage will also include a hot water outage from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. at main base and west side (east side will retain hot water capability).

Christopher Cook, point of contact for the outage, said people should plan out their day to ensure they are prepared to deal with the outage.

"Know what you are going to do that day," Cook said. "We recommend you get off base and enjoy the local area."

Cook added that individuals should check to see if their building will be affected before the outage.

"The one thing you particularly want to look out for in housing is the refrigerated and frozen food," he added. "If you can, turn your freezer and fridge up prior to the outage and add a couple of bags of ice, put easily perishable items in the freezer and try not to open the doors."

All emergency units have been notified and have repair or response teams such as electricians, heat shop crew, fire department, security forces and medical staff on standby as failure protection. Facility managers of buildings with generators that will need a refill during the outage are recommended to have personnel ready to sign for fuel.

The temporary lodging facility at east side will retain power. Medical facilities will have power and water stored in case of possible water interruption.
