Personnel assigned to the 374th Medical Group at Yokota received some much welcomed news following a Health Services Inspection Aug. 10. The results of the inspection were in and Yokota's medical team secured an "Excellent" rating.

"The HSI assesses the functioning and execution of Air Force Medical Service programs and processes at the local level in order to provide senior leadership with accurate data to base their policy decisions," said Capt. Jamie Robinson, resource management flight commander for the 374th Medical Support Squadron.

"The inspection also assesses the ability of Air Force medical units to fulfill their peacetime and wartime missions, including provision of medical care, success in training and equipping deployable personnel and support of the host wing mission," Robinson said.

The week-long inspection was conducted by a nine-person team of functional experts from the Air Force Inspection Agency from Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.

"We conduct approximately 25 active duty health services inspections a year and inspect every Air Force medical group in the U.S. and around the world," said Col. John C. Sell, HSI team chief and director of medical operations at the AFIA.

"This is a compliance-based inspection that looks at over 750 criteria by a team of medical functional experts. Colonel Yao [374 MDG commander] and her team should be very proud of an extremely successful inspection," Sell said.

Some areas within the medical group that were inspected and evaluated by the team included public health services, bioenvironmental engineering, dental services, public health, administration and mental health services.

"My goal for this inspection was to showcase our medical treatment facility as a premier community hospital serving Team Yokota. We strive to deliver not only quality but thoughtful, safe and caring medicine to all our beneficiaries," said Col. Eveline Yao, 374 MDG commander.

"This was truly a collaborative effort. Each and every one of our nearly 485 personnel has worked to make the 374 MDG the best it can be. Teamwork has been imperative," Yao said.

To prepare for the inspection, the 374 MDG created a project team to ensure all required elements and documentation were within HSI inspector checklist guidelines.

Also included were mock inspections and interviews, allowing staff members an opportunity to practice for scenarios and questions that could be asked during the actual inspection, Robinson said.

During the HSI, four members were identified as outstanding performers: Capt. Tracy Davis, 374th Surgical Operations Squadron same-day surgery clinic and infection control officer; Tech. Sgt. Kanisha Carson, 374th Medical Operations Squadron mental health technician; Tech. Sgt. Lakisha Tucker, 374 MDG self-inspection monitor and public health technician; and Senior Airman Kristine Becka, 374 MDSS medical readiness technician.

"I am extremely proud of each one of the 'Samurai Medics' who care for every patient, every day, with the utmost compassion," Yao said. "The inspections were a learning event for both us and the inspectors. They left us with the tools and areas for improvement, and we left them with our enduring story of the mission we do as the medics of Pacific Air Forces' one and only airlift wing."
