While summertime may be the most common time to barbecue, grilling is no longer just a summer activity. More and more people are beginning to grill year round. With the ever growing popularity of barbecuing, there are safety tips that are a must for everyone.

When using a gas grill, the National Propane Gas Association recommends using the grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area.

When the grill is not in use, ensure the grill is shut off, burners are cooled before being covered and the cylinder valve is closed. Always use or store cylinders in an upright, vertical position and away from other sources of ignition.

For the use of a charcoal grill, the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association recommends using charcoal briquettes or wood chunks doused with lighter fluid, DO NOT use gasoline.

Allow coals to burn out completely and let ashes cool at least 48 hours before disposing. Dispose cold ashes by wrapping in heavy-duty aluminum foil and placing them in a non-combustible container.
