Purple Heart Day 5K
Members of Team Yokota participated in a 5K run during Purple Heart Day at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Aug. 7, 2019. On 7 August 1782, General George Washington, the commander in chief of the Continental Army, created the "Badge of Merit," in Newburgh, New York. The badge was to be presented to soldiers for "any singularly meritorious action" and permitted its wearer to pass guards and sentinels without challenge. The honoree's name and regiment were also to be inscribed in a "Book of Merit." (U.S. Air Force Photo by Senior Airman Kevin West)
