The 374th Security Forces Squadron held active shooter scenarios at various locations, including the Exchange and Commissary, here March 15 and 16.

Instructors from Anser Analytic Services Inc. trained the Airmen to deal with scenarios in a safe environment, so they are prepared if an incident occurred in a real-world setting.

The training began in the classroom, where trainers taught security forces members information such as the history and mindset of active shooters, basic tactics and team tactics. From there, the Airmen had the chance to practice what they had learned.

"Applying what I had learned in the class room helped me retain the information, and I loved putting my knowledge to use in the scenarios," said Senior Airman Jermaine Anderson, 374th SFS patrolman. "It definitely made the whole thing seem real."

The training placed an emphasis on using familiar terrains and locations.

"We try to use places security forces members would have to use if there were ever an active shooter," said Tyler Hare, mobile training team analyst with Anser Analytic Services Inc. "Using an operational building is better than a training site because it gives them the sense of realism."

He also said that training at a variety of locations helps trainees analyze a developing situation and determine the most effective response.

"Simplicity equals confidence, which then turns to competence," said Hare. "We're building up their confidence so they can perform with efficiency."

The participating security forces members were also taught on how to execute the training scenarios themselves, ensuring the training can continue even after the analyst team leaves.

"I'm glad we were trained on the scenarios so I can teach others on how to deal with these kinds of situations," said Anderson. "I can wait to do this again."
